Hancock VFD and Mutual aid from Sullivan, Sorrento, and Franklin responded to a structure fire at the Stratton Rental house on US Rt 1. Upon arrival crews found brown smoke exiting the eves of the 3rd story. Active fire showing on the outside porch area and exterior wall . The home was of older balloon frame construction.
Aggressive but strategic fire attack utilizing the Thermal Imaging camera and Piercing nozzle kept damage to the historic structure to a minimum. The Fire was contained to the doorframe and above the door. Access was needed at the eaves to flow water back down upon the fire from above. Damage was contained to the same areas with some water/smoke damage to the interior bathrooms.
The 2nd and 3rd floor bathrooms were stacked in the A/B corner of the house, the fire/smoke followed the vent pipe up through the floors to the eaves. Cause of the fire was a careless cigarette left by a quest of a tenant on the front porch. Wind conditions pushed the fire from the porch to the exterior wall. The exterior is wood clapboards.
This building was no more than 500 ft +/- from the fire station and response was good on a late Friday afternoon. Water supply came from our Station 1 underground tanks.
3 tenants were displaced and the American Red Cross helped out with their lodging for the next few days.
