The town of Hancock is situated on the rugged coast of Maine in Hancock County. Much of the town overlooks beautiful Frenchman's Bay and Mount Desert Island which houses picturesque Acadia National Park. On the surrounding sides reside various other cities and towns, the Gateway to the Downeast, Ellsworth, along with the towns of Franklin, Sullivan, and Lamoine. The northeast side is bordered by the Taunton River, which opens up into Hog's Bay, and the west side is bordered by the Skilling's River.

Our Mission

To protect and serve the Town of Hancock, and surrounding mutual aid communities, by preventing fires through public education, and fire suppression. Supplying emergency medical service, technical rescue, Haz-mat response, and other public services. To provide the highest level of service feasible for the level of resources allocated to the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department.

The Hancock "Hornet"

The Hancock VFD and EMS has adopted a new mascot. He should look a bit familiar to the residents, especially those that have had children in Hancock Grammar school or still have children there. He is our new Fire Hornet! He doesn’t have a name yet. His origins lay in the school itself as the Hornet has always been the Hancock Grammar School mascot. When the school moved the entrance from the front of the building to the newly built side entrance, a new Welcome sign was hung. This sign sported a menacing looking Hornet in flight. According to sources, this Hornet was drawn by a student in the school then presented to local sign maker Todd Sargent of Sierra Signs. Todd then cleaned up the drawing and created the Hornet as we see today.

Chief Chris Holmes, saw the sign shortly after the install was complete and thought the hornet reminded him of something. Being a World War II buff and airplane buff, the hornet reminded him of the nose art seen on many bombers and fighters from that era. That thought was floated by a few members of the dept, and the school principal. The idea was then taken back to Todd at Sierra Signs. Chief Holmes and Todd then took the hornet and the nose art thought and came up with the Fire Hornet we see today.

The overall dept. design shows the hornet with and airpack, fire helmet and fire axe. We then took that, and adjusted him for the other various roles on the fire dept. The hornet that rides on the engines has a fire hose in his hand instead of the axe, the one on the tankers is carrying a bucket of water, the hornet on the Rescue trucks has a medical bag with a stethoscope, and finally, the brush truck hornet has a hard hat instead of the fire helmet and his tool is the Adz.

We feel this mascot brings Team Yellow even closer and further ties our community pride in providing protection and support for the citizens, property, and business’s of the town of Hancock and its surrounding communities.

Eastside Road blaze, keeps firefighter's busy for 6 hours.

A structure fire on the Eastside Rd. in Hancock, kept firefighters from 7 towns busy on January 15, 2008. The fire was believed to have started in an addition to the older two and a half story home. The owner, and his pet dogs were not inside at the time of the blaze. A passerby saw the flames and dialed 911! click the photo link to see photos from this incident.
